What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease occurs when your gums become infected with bacteria. In the early stage of the disease, called gingivitis, you’ll notice symptoms like swelling, inflammation, bad breath, bleeding, and even discomfort. If you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to get your teeth checked out right away.
Scaling & Root Planing
Coming in for regular, routine dental cleanings can help prevent gum disease in the first place. Once it starts, though, we can do a more specialized cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing to help keep the disease from progressing or even turn it back. This involves cleaning out bacteria from the pockets that form between your gums and the roots of your teeth, as well as gently removing plaque and tartar from the base of your teeth. You’ll typically need to have this procedure done regularly.
Osseous Surgery
If you’re suffering from an advanced case of gum disease, also called periodontitis, we can do a procedure called osseous surgery to help stop the spread of the disease. This involves making a small incision in your gum line so that your dentist can clean out bacteria and repair any damage that may have been done to your teeth and jaw. You’ll be comfortably numb during the procedure, and we can also provide safe, effective sedation options.
